I have 3 gallons of Valvoline Max-Live transmission fluid which states it is suitable for most Ford, Chrysler, etc using Dexron, Mercon LV (low viscosity), etc. According to "Bob is the Oil Guy", it is also a suitable replacement for Mercon V (5) as well as Mercon VI (6). Ford "solved" the problem when they created the Mercon V transmission fluid spec for model year 1998, which has an additive pack intended to prevent the lockup clutch from chattering. I'm sure Mercon LV has similar considerations in its spec. Yes, "worn out" transmission fluid with a depleted additive pack will definitely contribute to the shudder.

Mercon LV = Mercon low-viscosity. I asked this question about 7 months ago when I was doing my j-mod. I have use Valvoline Max-life in the past without any issues. I believe it is a one size fits all for Mercon V, Mercon LV, etc. This time, I used store-brand (from Advance Auto) Mercon V specifically. Or use DEX / MERC universal that does not mention mercon V on the lable. This old skool tranny seem to slip on mercon V. I ended up having to put the old fluid back in and spend weeks looking for the older fluid which was the solution. For all others use mercon v as stated above. BTW mercon LV started in 2009. So 09-11 take LV. _____ 3. Supertech and other Mercon V compliant specification. As is related by Overlord, no fluid that says recommended, compatible, or suitible for are good enough. Now I do need to note that Mercon V which the V stands for viscosity improved, and Mercon LV which the LV means low viscosity are not compatible with each other. I'm more worried about whoever is changing it using the wrong fluid or one of those magic 1 fluid covers many specs if it's flushed on a machine. My 2009 wants Mercon LV (not Mercon V) I'd rather know it's got the right fluid even if I'm only swapping out 5 quarts at a time. With the drain plug I can easily swap out another 5 quarts if I want.
Hello, im sure this has been talked about a bit. But im hoping to get some answers. Im rebuilding my transmission and it seems as though Mercon V is getting very difficult to find. I understand that you cannot mix both Mercon V and Mercon LV. But as this transmission is completely cleaned. I've heard of this happening when they put Mercon instead of Mercon V in. Both the base stock and additive packages are different and as a result, the clutch material is also different in transmissions that specify SP and LV fluids. Because of this, Mercon SP and LV cannot be mixed with Mercon or Mercon V fluids and if one attempts to drain completely and replace Mercon SP or LV risk damage to the clutches in . Hello, my 2004 P71's torque converter is dying with major shutter, high rev stalls, major loss of power etc. The fluid is still perfect and was always changed on time with Mercon V. I did a little research and discovered a few replacement model .
